Jalapeño pepper jam brings sweet and spicy flavors together in a colorful spread that can transform even the simplest snack. Fresh jalapeños provide a lively pepper flavor, while sugar and vinegar create the classic sweet-tangy balance.

The peppers soften as they cook, creating a glossy jam with just enough heat to keep every bite interesting. You can control the spice level by removing the jalapeño seeds for a milder jam or leaving some in for extra heat.

Serve it with cream cheese and crackers, spread it on sandwiches or grilled cheese, or use a spoonful to add sweet heat to roasted vegetables. It also makes a flavorful homemade addition to an appetizer board.

Cooking Instructions

  1. Wear kitchen gloves when handling the jalapeños. Remove the stems and remove most or all of the seeds for a milder jam.
  2. Finely chop the jalapeños and green bell pepper by hand or pulse briefly in a food processor.
  3. Place the chopped peppers, sugar, apple cider vinegar, lime juice, and salt in a medium saucepan.
  4. Stir well and bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
  5. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring frequently.
  6. Stir in the powdered fruit pectin until completely incorporated.
  7. Return the mixture to a full boil and cook according to the pectin package directions, usually about 1-2 minutes.
  8. Remove from the heat and let the jam cool for several minutes.
  9. Carefully transfer the warm jam to clean glass jars and allow it to cool to room temperature.
  10. Cover and refrigerate until completely chilled and set.

Notes

Wear gloves when cutting jalapeños and avoid touching your eyes or face.
Removing the seeds and inner membranes produces a milder pepper jam. Leave some in if you prefer more heat.
The jam will continue to thicken as it cools in the refrigerator.
Different pectin products can require different amounts of sugar and cooking times, so follow the package instructions for the specific pectin you use.
This recipe is intended as a refrigerator jam, not a shelf-stable canned preserve.
Serve with cream cheese and crackers, grilled cheese, sandwiches, or roasted vegetables.
