- Heat olive oil or butter in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add onion and cook for 4-5 minutes until soft.
- Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add asparagus and stir to coat.
- Pour in vegetable broth and bring to a gentle boil.
- Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes, until asparagus is very tender.
- Remove from heat and blend until smooth using an immersion blender or blender.
- Stir in milk and season with salt and black pepper.
- Warm gently and serve.
