- Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C).
- Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish or skillet.
- In a bowl, whisk cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Mix Wet Ingredients
- In another bowl, whisk milk, egg, and oil or butter.
- Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Transfer to baking dish and smooth the top.
- Bake 20–25 minutes, until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let cool slightly before slicing.
- Serve warm.
